How to Keep Your Brittany Spaniel Cool in the Summer
Share
At The Brittany Shop, we know Brittany Spaniels are energetic, lovable, and always up for an adventure. But as summer temperatures climb into the 80s, 90s, and beyond in many states, it’s important to keep your Brittany cool, comfortable, and safe.
Brittanys thrive in cooler climates and snowy weather—their double coats are designed to insulate them in cold conditions. But in the heat, their eagerness to play can lead them to overheat quickly, especially if we’re not paying close attention. Heat stroke in dogs is a serious concern and can happen faster than you think.
To help you protect your pup, here are our favorite Brittany Spaniel summer safety tips.
1. Keep them hydrated
The first and most important rule of summer dog care: water, water, and more water.
- Always provide fresh, cool water indoors and outside.
- Bring a portable dog water bottle or collapsible bowl on walks, hikes, or errands.
- Take more frequent water breaks during activity.
- Encourage drinking by adding a splash of bone broth (low sodium and dog-safe) to their bowl.
Some Brittanys can be so focused on play that they forget to drink—so give them a gentle reminder.
2. Brush and trim regularly (but never shave!)
Routine grooming helps your Brittany stay cool.
- Brushing removes loose fur and undercoat, improving airflow and comfort.
- You can trim feathering on their legs or belly for hygiene — but never shave your Brittany.
Shaving their fur too short can permanently damage their undercoat, which helps keep them cool in summer and warm in winter, and protects them from sunburn. Stick to brushing and minor trimming for optimal health.
3. Time outdoor activities wisely
Brittanys won’t always slow down when they should, so it’s up to us to set the pace.
- Walk or run in the early morning or evening when temps are lower.
- Avoid midday play—even in shade.
- Limit the duration and frequency of outdoor play sessions.
- Teach and use “settle” or “place” commands to encourage rest breaks.
- Use apps like WeatherBug or AccuWeather to check “feels like” temps and humidity.
- Never, ever leave your dog in a parked car—even for a minute.
4. Seek Shade
When outside, make shade your best friend.
- Provide natural or man-made shade like umbrellas or pop-up dog tents.
- Walk in shaded areas or tree-lined paths.
- Take frequent breaks in the shade—even if it’s your own shadow.
Shade helps your dog’s body cool down and prevents overheating.
5. Try Cooling Clothing
Lightweight cooling gear can make a big difference, especially during longer outings.
- Cooling vests absorb and slowly evaporate water, drawing heat from your dog’s body.
- A damp tee shirt or bandana can help reduce surface temperature.
- Re-wet regularly for continued effect.
6. Find Cool Water
Water play isn’t just fun — it’s functional!
- Let your dog wade through shallow streams or splash in lakes.
- Use a kiddie pool or hose in the yard for quick cool-downs.
- Offer cool (not icy) baths after hot outings.
Many Brittanys love water — take advantage of it to beat the heat.
7. Feed Frozen Treats
Turn snack time into cool-down time.
- Add ice cubes to water bowls.
- Freeze a stuffed Kong with peanut butter or wet food.
- Make DIY pupsicles with bone broth, banana, peanut butter (xylitol-free), Greek yogurt, or blueberries.
These are easy to batch-prep and perfect for hot afternoons.
8. Keep the House Cool
Make sure your Brittany has a chill zone indoors.
- Set your A/C to a comfortable, consistent temp.
- If crated, provide a cooling mat or damp towel/shirt with a nearby fan.
- Give them the option to lie on tile or hardwood floors when possible.
9. Know the Signs of Heat Stress
Heat stroke is life-threatening. Watch for:
- Excessive panting
- Bright red or pale gums
- Disorientation or wobbling
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Drooling or glazed eyes
What to Do:
- Move your dog to a shaded or cool indoor spot.
- Wet them down with cool (not ice-cold) water.
- Offer water in small sips.
- If symptoms persist: Call your vet immediately.
